The Nobel Prize is always dominated by the USA, although this year a Japanese professor won the prize for the first time in two years. His name is Mr. Tasuku Honjo.
The following is from the site of Nobel Prize: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2018 was awarded jointly to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.” Affiliation at the time of the award: Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan. Prize motivation: “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.
He was born January 27th 1942, Kyoto, Japan, he is 76 years old now.
I don’t know anything about this area, so I cannot say anything about it, however in his interview, he said it is very important to study a basic research. That is true. I think so too.
In Japan, still we have been appearing the Nobel Prize in this century very well, it is second most producing country following the USA, we are facing a critical situation that we have been reducing the grant or fund to research in universities, especially in the field of a basic research and study that doesn’t make results quickly.
In a long span, I think we will lose our basic power for those physical and chemical subjects, because we are a lack of fund of studying of a basic research.
Also in the TV program, it was said that Mr. Honjo has been continuously studying a basic study since he was young.
I think in any fields, “basic” is very important for creating and developing new things.
I hope we can change this situation for continuing to appear excellent results for leading the world in every area.
